Send Your Dents to Twitter Automatically!

by Marina Martin

in Identi.ca Tools

Brad Williams (@williamsba) put together an Identi.ca/Twitter bridge, which automatically sends every dent you post on Identi.ca to Twitter.

You can choose to prepend your messages with “[From Identi.ca]” or whatever other phrase you prefer.

Start bridging your updates!

Word of caution: This sends every message to Twitter, including @ replies, which probably won’t make sense to your Twitter followers (since they can’t see the other half of the conversation). An option to exclude @ replies from the bridge is in the works.

My $0.02: Brad is awesome for putting this together, and if this is what’s stopping you from switching to Identi.ca, go for it. However, if you’re really dedicated to changing the microblogging playing field and supporting an open-source, federated alternative, then let your friends on other services know they can find you on Identi.ca, and don’t cross-post.

Thanks for the write-up Marina!

I’m actually glad you posted your opinion on the subject. I didn’t realize at the time, but this tool has stirred up some great conversations. I actually created this tool to give me the reason to switch to Identi.ca full time, just as you wrote. I’ve been wanted to leave Twitter ever since my account was locked for too many followers. At that point I realized the potential problems that could be caused by the standard micro-blogging platform being controlled by a single company, especially from a developers standpoint. However I didn’t want to abandon my connections on Twitter. Eventually I do plan to drop my bridge as well and make the full switch with no cord, but in the meantime this gave me the reason I needed to make the switch to Identi.ca

Ken Sheppardson (@kshep) has apparently put together a bridge too. http://bridge.kshep.net/

I just tested and Ken’s bridge supports utf8 while Brad’s currently does not.

The ability to selectively dent to just identi.ca would indeed be very useful as some dents only make sense on one site.

I am new to the bridge thing, which essentially are one way feeds of dents from identi.ca or Leo Laporte’s army.twit.tv or any other laconica installation.

From what I can tell there are currently three ways of doing this bridge, though I am sure this will multiply very soon, and I likely have missed a few (please add them in the comments).

* Build your own with the rss feed from any laconica instance, for example http://identi.ca/jeffmcneill/rss and TwitterFeed http://twitterfeed.com

* Ken Sheppardson’s bridge at http://bridge.kshep.net/ currently works with identi.ca accounts (there is a drop-down list which may include additional laconica servers to choose from at this point)

* Brad Williams has a bridge over at webdevstudios http://webdevstudios.com/update-twitter-from-your-identica-account-automatically/ . Currently this is for identi.ca only.
